Philip Kotler (90) is jarig!

‘De vader van marketing is en blijft een inspirerend leermeester, voor studenten, marketeers en onderzoekers’

We hebben iets te vieren! Op 27 mei 1931 kreeg het Amerikaanse echtpaar Betty en Maurice Kotler, emigranten die in 1917 vanuit Oekraïne in Chicago waren neergestreken, een zoon. Philip was de naam en met een beetje gevoel voor drama zou je ‘m vandaag kunnen beschrijven als de Newton of de Freud van marketing. Hij is dé grondlegger van het moderne vak.

Misschien kwam het omdat hij studeerde onder niet minder dan drie (!) Nobelprijswinnaars in de economische wetenschappen: Milton Friedman, Paul Samuelson en Robert Solow. Philip Kotler, niet alleen marketingauteur, maar ook adviseur en vooral professor bedacht de definitie van de marketingmix. Hij schreef meer dan 80 boeken, waaronder Marketing Management, Principles of Marketing, Kotler on Marketing, Marketing Insights from A to Z, Marketing 4.0, Marketing Places, Marketing of Nations, Chaotics, Market Your Way to Growth, Winning Global Markets, Strategic Marketing for Health Care Organizations, Social Marketing, Social Media Marketing, My Adventures in Marketing, Up and Out of Poverty, and Winning at Innovation.

Juist Kotler bedacht ook het concept van ‘demarketing’

En zoals het helden betaamt gaf Kotler gedurende zijn loopbaan ook blijk van zijn sociale en maatschappelijk betrokken kanten. Hij hielp bij het ontwikkelen van het terrein dat sociale marketing wordt genoemd en dat zich richt op het helpen van individuen en groepen om hun gedrag aan te passen in de richting van gezondere en veiligere leefstijlen. Juist Kotler bedacht ook het concept van ‘demarketing’ om te helpen bij het verminderen van de vraag. Hij ontwikkelde ook de begrippen ‘prosumenten’, ‘atmospherics’ en ‘societal marketing’. Kotlers nieuwste werk concentreert zich op economische rechtvaardigheid en de tekortkomingen van het kapitalisme.

Grappig genoeg krijgt hij nog geregeld kritiek te verduren omdat ‘zijn’ klassieke marketing-P’s er niet meer toe zouden doen (een opvatting die door Mark Ritson overigens wordt weggeschamperd“Attempts to update the four Ps are embarrassing – they’ve endured for a reason”), maar die P’s – Product, Plaats, Prijs en Promotie – of beter: de bekendste invulling van het concept, werd bedacht door Jerome McCarthy. Die stelde dat marketeers in essentie vier variabelen of ingrediënten kunnen gebruiken bij het opstellen van een marketingplan.

FMCG crowned the best paid sector for marketers

The FMCG sector offers the best pay for marketers, according to the 2020 Marketing Week Career and Salary Survey.

The analysis of pay across 24 different sectors found that FMCG is on average the best paid sector for marketing, with a mean salary of £63,916. It is followed by gaming and gambling, and health and pharmaceuticals.

At the bottom of the ranking, meanwhile, is education, with an average marketing salary of £44,424. This is followed by the construction and property sector, and the charity/not-for-profit sector.

How the gender pay gap impacts female marketers’ career progression

The gender pay gap, and its effect on female progression in business, is a pervasive and persistent problem that shows no signs of abating. 

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the average gender pay gap for full-time female workers has been stuck at 14.1% for the past three years. The gender pay gap for women in their 20s is five times greater than it was six years ago and as it stands the pay gap means that from 10 November 2017 – Equal Pay Day – women were in effect working for free for the rest of last year.

The marketing profession is in no way immune. According to the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, released last October, the average pay gap for marketing and sales directors is 12%, while the average pay gap for marketing associate professionals is 17.4%. The ONS defines the gender pay gap as the difference between men’s and women’s hourly earnings based on a percentage of men’s earnings.

Microsoft: Tech means marketing is now a career option for more people
